Sky 3D will be launched by BSkyB on Easter Saturday with the Barclays Premier League match between Man Utd and Chelsea.
The launch of Sky 3D will be Europe’s first 3D TV channel. It means that Sky customers who have a 3D TV set, will also be able to access the channel in their homes from early April.
The 3D TV channel will show five more Premier League football matches before the end of the current season on May 9. The Coca-Cola Football League play-off finals from Wembley at the end of May will also be shown live and in 3D.
Brian Lenz, Sky’s Director of Product Design and TV Product Development, says: “It’s fitting that one of the biggest games of the season will be the launch pad for our pioneering Sky 3D service.”
Later in the year Sky 3D will show a range of content including further sport, movies, documentaries, entertainment and arts.
Initially subscribers of Sky’s top channels and HD pack will have access to Sky 3D at no further cost.
The channel is compatible with Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic 3D TV sets. For example there’s Sony’s new range of Bravia 3D LCD televisions and Panasonic’s new Viera range of 3D televisions.
If you don’t have a 3D TV and don’t want to get one you’ll need another 3D input source, such as a 3D Blu-ray player. That said with block busters appearing more frequently now in 3D, such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, no doubt there’ll be more and more turning to get a 3D TV in their home.
