With many people soon to head off on a skiing holiday, it’s important to make sure you have travel insurance that sufficiently covers you and your ski equipment.

Travel Insurance Skiing HolidayWhether you already have or are about to buy travel insurance, it really is advisable to check exactly what cover it provides.

The reason being is that independent financial research company Defaqto has identified significant variation in the winter sports cover offered by different insurance policies.

Defaqto found that of the 349 single trip policies that offer winter sports cover:

  • 64% provide £500 worth of cover or less for winter sports equipment
  • 45% cover £200 or less for total closure of the piste
  • 7% provide cover of £150 or less for the loss of a ski pass.

There’s also injury to others to consider as well as loss or damage to expensive equipment, reimbursement for closed pistes as well as the usual insurance cover for such as cancellation or lost baggage.

When on a family ski holiday, many take advantage of activities such as  skidooing and heliskiing, activities which may well not be covered in a standard travel insurance policy.

As Mike Powell, Defaqto’s Insight Analyst for General Insurance, says: “It is therefore important for skiers to buy cover that meets their particular needs.

We would urge people to focus on policy features and not just focus on paying the lowest price for cover – the cheapest option can often prove costly if something does go wrong.”
