Dog And Cat Owners Have No Pet Insurance For Their Pet’s Dental Problems

With the average cost of a pets dental treatment at almost £200, most cat and dog owners are not covered for these costs with their pet insurance.
An estimated 1.76 million cats and dogs suffered dental problems last year, costing and average of £200 to treat, however Sainsbury’s Finance has discovered that 60% of pet owners did not have sufficient dental cover under their pet insurance policies to claim for these costs.
Labradors are most susceptible to dental health problems, and had the highest number of dental pet insurance claims across both cats and dogs. For cats, Siamese are the most likely to suffer from dental health problems, Sainsbury’s found.
Analysing the data by region showed that it was cats and dogs in the East Midlands and the East of England that suffered most from dental problems, although there was no explanation about why pets in these areas suffered the most issues with their teeth.
With so many animals having problems with their mouths and teeth, prevention is better than cure, says Lucy Hunter of Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance:
“Owners should take their pets to the vet for regular dental checks and take professional advice to reduce the risk of problems occurring. Also, when looking at pet insurance policies, owners should choose very carefully and not just consider price alone.”
“Investing in a good quality policy that offers a high level of cover, including dental cover, will ensure that the family pet is well cared for and you won’t have to worry about costly treatments.”
Sainsbury’s Finance has recently announced the extension of its pet insurance promotion which sees it offer 1/3 off when purchasing online up to and including 2 May 2011. Pet owners taking advantage of the offer also have the opportunity to receive a further 5% discount if they insure a second pet.
MoneyHighStreet.com Comment: The Sainsbury’s pet insurance deal looks good, however it always pays to shop around for the best pet insurance deal, checking that dental cover is included, of course.
