Pets are regularly fed leftovers overs of our human food, including curry, pizza and fish and chips and this despite the fact that a third of cats and dogs are now overweight, a very serious issue.
According to research from MORE TH>N Pet Insurance, some 72% of cat and dog owners are allowing their pets to feed on the leftovers of unhealthy human foods such as fish and chips on a regular basis. In fact 10% of owners allow this every day.
Why is it though that pet owners allow their pets to eat such unhealthy food – not just fish and chips but burgers, lasagne, chicken chow mein, moussaka and roast dinner too?
Apparently 25% can’t resist their pet begging and just want to please them, while another 41% say that they offload the meals because they don’t think it will do their pets any harm.
Such meals are full of calories and can quickly cause pets to become obese.
To encourage pet owners to feed their animals more responsibly and wean them off fatty fish and chips and lardy lasagnes, MORE TH>N Pet Insurance has worked with animal nutritionist Stephanie Mehanna to create healthy, low-calorie and pet-friendly recipes of the most popular dishes.
All of these recipes can be found by visiting www.morethan.com/pet.
John Ellenger, Head of MORE TH>N Pet Insurance, added: “Brits are undoubtedly a nation of pet lovers, so it’s no surprise that we want to spoil our animals by showering them with treats.
“However, in the long run this unhealthy love is doing much more harm than good and leading to serious health complications.”
MoneyHighStreet comments: “Even though pet owners consider their pets as ‘one of the family’, feeding them their food is really not a sensible thing to do..
“Owning a pet means you need to take responsibility for their health and well being. This includes looking after their diet and medical needs.
“It’s well worth looking at the pet friendly recipes that Stephanie Mehanna has helped produce.
“It’s also important to consider protection for your pet by buying the best pet insurance. Don’t just opt for the cheapest cover though. As with any insurance buy the cover you need, at the best price you can get.”
