Working From Home May Cost You Rather Than Pay You

As many people look to make more money, working from home can seem an easy win without the need for any particular qualifications, skills or expertise but does working from home pay you or cost you?

Working From HomeAccording to research by Which? Money Quarterly few working from home adverts in newspapers and online appear to offer proper job vacancies and could cost people over £7,000.

13 adverts in national newspapers and 10 adverts online were reviewed by ecperts who found that:

  • Many adverts required an upfront fee for more information or training which the researchers failed to receive
  • Not one advert found in a national newspaper offered a recognisable ‘job’ or regular salary
  • It was difficult, or even impossible, to earn the amount of money claimed in some adverts
  • The job opportunity often failed to match what was promised in the advert.

As an example of the working from home opportunities available, one advert said that people could “make £27,013 monthly” and required £17 for a guide on creating iPhone apps.  Not only is making this amount unlikely, but there are similar books available on Amazon for just £9.

Which Money Quarterly gives the following advice to those looking for working from home opportunities:

Find out as much as you can about the opportunity and exactly what the job entails before signing up or sending money

  • Genuine working opportunities don’t usually ask for money so don’t send off money to ‘working from home’ companies requesting it as you may well fine it hard to get it back if you are not satisfied
  • Be very careful who send your personal details to – you can use Companies House to check out company details. Protect your personal information at all times
  • Check how you will be paid and whether you’ll get a salary or commission

Be aware that if an advert sounds too good to be true, it probably is! If you are concerned that a working from home ad is misleading you can report it to Consumer Direct or the Advertising Standards Authority.
