Diet But No Gym in 2012

Whilst losing weight may still be at the top of many New Year resolution lists, for 2012 many are not turning to the gym to help as they try to save money.

New Year resolution Research by moneysupermarket.com shows that over two thirds of consumers won’t be joining or renewing their membership as they believe the gym is an unnecessary cost, and they keep fit and healthy in other ways.

Some 12% of Brits are concerned about the cost implications with 5% not planning to renew their membership as they rarely used it this year and need to cut costs.

A further 6% are unsure about signing up due to the current economic climate and needing to rethink their spending.

James Clarke, Head of Protection at MoneySupermarket.com said: “Joining a gym can be a huge financial commitment, and with many gym-goers admitting to rarely using their membership, it’s important to consider whether their hard earned cash can be used more effectively.”

He added: “For those exercise fanatics who commit to the gym and work out on a regular basis it is worth knowing there are life insurance and critical illness policies that reward a healthy lifestyle.

“The same also applies for smokers who quit the habit, as there is a huge price difference between policies for smokers and non-smokers. Brits could see average savings of £4,347 over the term of the policy – a significant sum of money!”

MoneyHighStreet comments: “Earlier this year the high court ruled that lengthy gym membership contracts were unfair and as such more flexible gym options are thankfully now being offered. So whilst membership can be expensive at least things have improved and your financial commitment no longer has to be as great as it used to.

“An example is payasUgym.com which doesn’t have membership, you just pay for what you use and single visits start from just £3 – see their website for more information.

“Another option maybe is to opt for a Wii Fit Plus to help burn the calories – a one-off cost for something that is always available, as long as you have the motivation to use it.

“If you’re looking for help with your diet, there are so many programs to choose from – including for example Tesco Diets who say ‘We know you are going to love losing weight with Tesco Diets but if you don’t we’ll give you your money back!’ – sounds a good deal doesn’t it?! – see tescodiets.com website for all the details.”

I’ve seen that there is a new gym opening in Leeds in Feb 2012, called Xercise4Less, and it’s only £.9.99 per month! Reading up on it, the fitness studio and gym are going to be massive, I’m certainly getting involved!
