Holidaymakers 'should consider extra insurance for high-value items'

Holidaymakers heading off on trips with a large number of valuable possessions need to make sure the items are covered by their insurance policy before they leave, an industry expert has said.Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson from the Association of British Insurers (ABI), said that passengers might find they needed to insure valuable items individually as many policies placed a limit on the size of a claim.
"Your travel policy is only going to cover you for a limited amount," Mr Tarling explained.
"It's a question of checking your policy and checking if you have cover for items outside of the home under your household policy.
"It is always sensible to read the policy to understand what you are covered for before you buy it."
Mr Tarling said that there were a number of things passengers could do to make it easier for them to claim on their insurance if their luggage was lost by an airline.
He pointed out that passengers should "make a note of what's in the bag when you pack it" and try to "keep receipts".
"When you travel, think about if you need to take valuable items and label your property, inside and out."
