Home insurance While home contents insurance might seem expensive it is a vital financial tool, an industry expert has said.

Debra Williams, the managing director of Confused.com, said that many low-income households were put off home insurance because of its cost.

For such people, Ms Williams said that spreading the cost of the cover was a sensible option.

"The cost of insurance may seem expensive to low income households but protecting your home and its contents should be an important consideration," she added.

"Spreading the cost of insurance has proved popular for a large number of home insurance customers."

What's more, Ms Williams said that it was important that people applying for home insurance reviewed the contents of the property every year to make sure new items were still covered.

"People's possessions change regularly and it is important their insurance cover accurately reflects that," she concluded.

A recent study by Zurich showed that 37 per cent of people have no home insurance in the UK.
