signing mortgage Rising insurance premiums are putting some drivers off using their cars, a new report has stated.

Research from MoneyExpert.com found that 25 per cent of motorists said that they were now using their vehicle less because of rising costs.

While 76 per cent said that recent increase in petrol costs were dissuading them from driving, one in ten (eight per cent) cited rises in car insurance premiums.

The site pointed out the average cost of a car insurance premium in the UK has now jumped to £629.04.

MoneyExpert.com's Sean Gardner commented: "Many people are finding their finances are being squeezed to the limit, and when that limit breaks something has to give.

"Petrol costs are high but the single biggest outlay a driver has to account for is their insurance premium. And as it's illegal to drive without it the only way to minimise the damage is to shop 'til you drop and get the best possible car insurance deal you can find."

Recently, uSwitch warned that many drivers were paying too much for their car insurance because they were picking 'on-the-spot' cover offered by manufacturers.
