Holiday insurance 'still vital for people planning not to leave their hotel'

Excalibur hotel and casino Even people who do not plan to leave their hotel while on holiday need the proper insurance, an industry expert has said.

Research carried out by Halifax Travel Insurance found that 2.5 million Britons take a package holiday to an exotic location each year, but only spend an average of seven hours outside of their hotel.

Despite this, Halifax's Paul Birkhead said that it was still vital holidaymakers opted for comprehensive travel insurance.

"Holiday insurance is still a necessity regardless of what you plan to do on your break," he explained.

"People intending to stay in the confines of the resort will still need cover as accidents can happen by the pool, your luggage can still go missing or your holiday can be cut short for unforeseen reasons.

"Holidaymakers should not be lulled into a false sense of security thinking they are immune from things going wrong just because they won't be going anywhere other than the hotel."

In March, research from Sainsbury's suggested that around ten per cent of holidaymakers set off on their trip without insurance.
