Gap year travel insurance a 'must'

Hikers People who are planning to take a year out of work or education to go travelling must make sure that they have got insurance.

STA Travel has warned those intending to embark on a long trip that they need to plan as far ahead for their journey as they can and be "covered for every eventuality".

A spokesperson said: "We would recommend that travellers plan as much of their trip as possible in advance.

"Travel insurance is an absolute must for any traveller to ensure they are covered for every eventuality wherever they are in the world."

The company also noted that there are various ways for gap year travellers to get information while they are awAy from home.

"There are RSS live feeds that travellers can subscribe to via their mobile phone, which will keep
them up to date with 'what's on when' and flight offers - great content for the active traveller."

A recent report from i-to-i found that in 2007, 29 per cent of people planned to quit their jobs to take a gap year.
