Meeting with accountant Consumers who are looking to get advice about their taxes should always make sure that they speak to an expert.

That is the opinion of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT), which has asserted that people "should always go to a properly qualified tax adviser".

John Whiting, chairman of the CIOT's Management of Taxes Sub-Committee of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, said that the best approach would be to take the time to find someone that is trustworthy.

He also advised that consumers should seriously think about what they need an advisor for, as individual circumstances will affect the type of person they will need to see.

Mr Whiting explained: "If you want to build an extension on your house you will look around to get recommendations - it's the same process when looking for a tax adviser. Make sure that you get an adviser you can trust.

"You need to think what it is you want - if you are a very wealthy person with lots of interests and personal wealth, you need a specialist who might deal with trusts and planning et cetera, et cetera. If you are self employed and just need your books doing, then you just need a competent accountant who knows how to do a tax return."
