Dating more costly for men

Sitting outside cafe Britons are relatively old fashioned when it comes to dating, with men generally expected to pick up the bill.

The latest NS& I Quarterly Savings Survey has revealed that men generally think that they will pay around 60 per cent more than women while on a date.

On average, men expect to spend more than £50 while women think that they will only pay around £30. Collectively, British men will spend over £12 billion on dating a year, while women will spend £4.5 billion.

In addition, the survey revealed that 25 per cent of men will spend on their credit card and 16 per cent would borrow cash from family or friends to pay for a date. However, it also showed that 26 per cent of men would specifically put aside money for a date.

Commenting on the findings, Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS& I, said: "There is no doubt that dating costs a lot and many people in Britain need to think beyond impressing with wit and charm and also plan their finances. Given the expense, especially for men, it is great to see that some are setting money aside specifically for this reason.

"However, it is clear that men need to keep at least a few of their thoughts on money when they're trying to impress on a date, so they don't end up overspending or being caught short of cash."
