sitting room A worrying number of people in the UK do not have adequate home contents insurance, a new study has warned.

Data released by Confused.com showed that a quarter of people in the country did not have home contents insurance.

What's more, the research indicated that the average cost of insuring a suburban home with £40,000 worth of contents was just £57.42 per year.

Debra Williams, the managing director at Confused.com, said that contents insurance should be considered an absolute necessity.

She added: "Many people decide against contents cover without considering the potential pitfalls involved.

"By failing to insure their home contents, Britons are potentially setting themselves up for a large bill, not to mention emotional turmoil, should they be unfortunate enough to suffer any loss or damage.

"It is for this reason that belongings need to be adequately covered."

A separate study from Allianz indicated that people from the UK were set to cause £25 million worth of damage to their home and possessions when they carry out DIY work over the Easter break.

The firm said that the figures showed how important it was to have adequate home contents insurance.
