Relaxing with the laptop Consumers are unsure that they have opted for the best value broadband provider, a new study has indicated.

Research by uSwitch found that over eight million people were not sure that they had opted for the best value broadband provider or deal and five million consumers felt that they had been short changed by their internet service provide (ISP).

Overall, the study showed that over half the country now has broadband and that consumers spend £3 billion a year on these services.

It also revealed that PlusNet was considered to be the best ISP, scooping the awards for Best Overall Provider after 86 per cent of customers said they were satisfied.

"The 21 per cent gap between the best and worst provider shows just how important it is to choose a provider on service and not just price," commented Steve Weller, communications expert at uSwitch.com.

"Despite prices falling by 36 per cent in four years, over five million have never switched their broadband provider.

"Our advice for customers is to decide what they want from their service, be it price, value or support, and do some research before entering into a new contract."
