People driving to festivals with friends 'should contact their insurer'

Car Smash 2 People planning on driving to festivals with their friends should let their insurance company know about the plan before setting off, industry experts have warned.

Erik Nelson, a spokesperson for the RAC, explained that drivers should let their car insurance company know if it seemed likely that another person was going to drive the vehicle, even if they had their own comprehensive insurance.

Mr Nelson explained that it was often relatively easy and cheap for drivers to add people to an insurance policy and this could provide piece of mind.

"If a person wanted to drive a friend’s car and were insured fully comprehensively on their own vehicle they would be third party only on their friend's car," he added.

"There is a lot of misunderstanding about this. If your friend crashes your car, say he puts it into a tree, you are going to face 100 per cent of the bill."

Recently, Tesco Personal Finance called on the government to scrap the insurance premium tax on green cars to make these vehicles cheaper to insure and more attractive to consumers.
