Uninsured homeowners risking costly storm damages

Rain As storms continue to batter the country, a new study has warned that nearly two million homeowners are without buildings insurance.

Figures released by Sainsbury's Home Insurance showed that 1.78 million households are without buildings cover.

What's more, 656,000 people claimed they did not know if they had buildings insurance at the moment.

"Thousands of homes could be at risk from storms this week so it’s alarming to see so many without buildings insurance," commented Neil Laird, home insurance manager at Sainsbury's.

"The growing number of weather-related instances really highlights the importance of having adequate cover in this area and unlimited buildings cover ensures peace of mind that you won't be left underinsured should the unthinkable happen."

Earlier this week, experts at moneysupermarket.com suggested that periods of bad weather generally encouraged more people to consider home and buildings insurance.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at the site, explained: "During the flooding chaos last summer, moneysupermarket.com saw a 300 per cent increase in applications for home insurance, rising to a surge of 1,700 per cent in one affected area."
