People 'need to check with insurance provider if going on very long holiday'

house People planning long holidays should check their home contents insurance policy to see how long they can leave their house unattended for, industry experts have warned.

Ian Crowder, the public relations manager at the AA, explained that different insurance providers often imposed different rules about how long a property could be left completely unattended.

Alternatively, he suggested that some insurance companies would impose rules, such as demanding that homeowners arranged for someone to come and check on the property, if they were leaving the country for an extended period of time.

He explained: "Check your policy to see how long you can leave your home unattended - various insurers have various terms.

"[Some] may impose an additional premium or reduce level of cover, or even not cover at all."

However, Mr Crowder did say that some homeowners could discover that they do not need cover for their baggage on holiday if their home contents insurance already allows them to take personal possessions out of the home.

"If you have cover for personal possessions outside the home, see if it covers you outside the UK. In most cases it will cover [you] anywhere in the world," he concluded.

Recent research from LV= showed that the average UK home has £25,000 worth of content.
