Super-fast broadband services 'could become more popular in coming years'

While super-fast broadband services are set to launch in the UK later this year, it is unlikely that the home consumer will really benefit from the connections, an industry expert has claimed.Recently, Virgin Broadband revealed that it would launch a 50mbps broadband service later in the year.
However, Mark Jackson, editor-in-chief of ISPreview.co.uk, revealed that it was unlikely that consumers would do anything on the internet that required such a speed and this meant is was about "being able to wave a marketing flag saying 'we're faster than everybody else'".
He added that the fast connection broadband providers would probably look to "promote its service in such a way as to make it sound like a whole new experience".
"In reality that couldn't be further from the truth because while some customers may receive close-ish to the headline speed, most will not," Mr Jackson warned.
In conclusion, Mr Jackson said that consumers would increasingly look for a fast connection broadband provider in order to enjoy "real-time high quality video and TV (IPTV) streams".
Recent research from Broadband-Expert showed that the average connection speed in the UK was just 2.95Mbps.
