InterRailers 'need to make sure they have comprehensive insurance'

First Great Western Young people planning InterRail trips across Europe this year need to make sure they have appropriate insurance, an industry exert has said.

A spokesperson for the Student Travel Association (STA) said that insurance was particularly important for people planning on getting around Europe by train as they tended to carry everything in one bag.

One of the spokesperson's top pieces of advice for anyone planning an InterRail trip was simply to "take insurance".

She explained: "With all your possessions in one bag, it is advisory to take adequate travel insurance.

"Also, make sure your insurance also covers the loss/theft of your InterRail pass."

What's more, the spokesperson added that planning ahead was important too.

"Train station platforms are not a comfortable or safe place to sleep! Book your accommodation for your next destination before you leave for it," she pointed out.

However, recent figures from gapyear.com suggest that many young people are heading off on long trips without the necessary cover.

The site found that 25 per cent of young people travel uninsured or underinsured.
