cash machine A financial security expert has said that consumers need to think about the simple measure they can take to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of credit card fraud.

The latest research showed that 28 per cent of people living in London have already been a victim of credit card fraud.

However, Danny Harrison, a security expert at financial support firm CPP, explained that simple precautions could cut down risks considerably.

He said: "These fraudsters are always looking for an easy target in the same way that a burglar would look for the easiest car to steal or the easiest house to get into.

"You need to be careful where you keep your cards; how many cards you carry around with you; keeping your card in view when you are using it."

In addition, Mr Harrison said that people needed to be very careful when using their credit card online.

"You need to keep your anti-virus software and firewall software up to date and also consider which websites you are buying from when shopping online," he added.

Figures from Card Watch suggest that credit card fraud cost British consumers £439 million in 2005.
