House with solar panel Investing a homeowner loan in work to ensure a property is as energy efficient as possible could pay off when it comes to selling it.

That's according to the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), which said that in the future buyers will 'notice' homes with green measures installed.

"They will be looking at whether you've got double glazing, whether you've got an efficient energy system and heating system," said NHIC technical consultant Andrew Leech.

He added that home information packs (Hips) specify the kinds of measures that all houses should have put in place, something that buyers will stick to when looking at potential homes.

"The surveyors who will be looking at the property after somebody decides to purchase it … that's the sort of thing they will be looking for," Mr Leech explained.

A survey undertaken since the introduction of energy performance certificates (part of Hips) found that on average four bedroom homes scored an 'E' rating, something which undertaking recommended improvements could be increased to a 'C'.
