Research carried out by Moneysupermarket found that 28 per cent of skiers and snowboarders do not ensure they are properly insured before jetting off.

Some 23 per cent were unable to remember if they had arranged travel insurance with men being the worst for travelling without cover, as 31 per cent didn't bother with insurance compared to 24 per cent of women.

"The millions of people who do ski and snowboard cannot afford to skimp on their travel insurance," said Peter Gerrard from the price comparison site.

"While some people may not realise they need extra cover for winter sports, it seems many are prepared to take a huge financial risk, both to themselves and potentially to other skiers."

The report also revealed that many people head to ski resorts to soak up the atmosphere alone, with 22 per cent not setting foot on the slopes at all during their break.

A recent study from Bradford & Bingley found that the average travel insurance claim per individual in December last year was 50 per cent higher than in September.
