Moving home A quarter (25 per cent) of first-time buyers would be willing to move to a different area of the country if it meant they could purchase their first home and get onto the property ladder, according to new research.

A survey of potential first-time buyers commissioned by Abbey Mortgages revealed that one in six (16 per cent) would even consider moving abroad, to a country where house prices are more manageable.

The study, which looked at the full extent to which British consumers would go to attain their own property, also revealed that one in three (39 per cent) would take on a second job to help with the finances, while one in six (16 per cent) would even consider a third job.

Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, head of Abbey Mortgages, said: "It's interesting to see the lengths that people are prepared to go to for their first property.

"Although it can be more difficult these days to become established on the property ladder than it has been for previous generations, there are still a number of options for first-ime buyers that don't require taking such drastic measures."

While only one in ten of those who have bought a property in the last five years would have sold items possessing sentimental value, the research indicated that one in five (20 per cent) first-time buyers would be prepared to do so.
