Consumers plan to move at Christmas

More and more people plan to get a mortgage and move house over the Christmas period, a new report has suggested.Alliance & Leicester Mortgages' Movingimproving Index showed that one in four (22 per cent) move home in the 12-week run-up to Christmas.
Despite the upheaval, 53 per cent of pre-Christmas movers said that they expect to keep to their festive budget after moving. A prudent ten per cent said they had saved to cover their seasonal spending earlier in the year.
However, 19 per cent admitted they had not budgeted enough for Christmas and two per cent thought that they would rely on credit cards or loans to bankroll their Christmas budgets.
Stephen Leonard, director of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester, said: "With so many people moving into their new homes during the run-up to Christmas it can feel like a rush to get the family settled and the new furniture ordered before December 25th.
"But it is very encouraging to see many people are planning ahead to budget for their moving costs and saving in advance to ensure it doesn't have a big impact on their Christmas. Clearly planning ahead, budgeting and saving are the key to a less stressful move."
Recently, James Falla, director of Thomas Charles, said that setting a budget was the best way to avoid debt over the holidays.
