Drivers 'would say sorry if they crashed'

Car Smash 2 The majority of UK motorists would say sorry in the event of a crash, potentially admitting liability, a leading insurer has found.

esure decided to find out about the nation's actions in the event of an accident after data showed that far more people end up having accidents and making insurance claims in November.

The insurer discovered that 75 per cent of drivers would apologise to the other party in the event of an accident. However, esure explained: "As a rule, never say sorry or admit fault or liability at the scene of an accident."

Furthermore, only 30 per cent of people said that they would remember to use their camera or phone to take pictures of any damage that resulted from the crash.

Worryingly, seven per cent of drivers said that they would forget to swap insurance details after the accident. The insurer said that it was a good idea for all motorists to keep a piece of paper with vital insurance info written out in the car.

"As more wintry weather affects driving conditions and daylight hours shrink this month, the likelihood of being involved in a car accident is at its peak," explained Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting.

"Being prepared for the unexpected is crucial. Knowing what to do and what not to in the event of an accident will help making an insurance claim as hassle-free as possible."

Figures from the AA indicate that the average quoted premium for an annual comprehensive car insurance policy rose by more than one per cent in the past quarter.
