Drivers 'don't realise speeding adds to insurance costs'

Speed Camers 2 Many drivers fail to realise that motoring offences such as speeding will increase their insurance premiums, an industry expert has said.

AA spokesperson Ian Crowder has asserted that people often did not think about the fact that a speeding ticket could cost them far more than the £60 fine.

"When you get flashed by a [speed] camera, potentially you're not only collecting a £60 fine, you're potentially also collecting a £60 increase in your insurance premiums for the next three years," Mr Crowder explained.

"So you could end up paying four times the fine. Speeding offences can be very expensive and I think most people tend to overlook that. It's not just the £60 fine."

What's more, he explained that people with more serious motoring convections - such as drink and dangerous driving penalties - sometimes struggle to get any car insurance whatsoever.

Separate figures from the AA indicate that the typical cost of fully comprehensive car insurance rose by one per cent over the second quarter of 2007.

However, figures released by the Ministry of Justice recently showed that the number of people issued with speed camera fines dropped by 40,000 during 2005.
