Nearly 3 million consumers switch utility providers

Nearly three million households in the UK switched utility supplier in the first seven months of 2007, new figures show. The energy watchdog, Ofgem, published data which indicates that 2.8 million households switched utility supplier between the start of the year and the end of July.
According to the watchdog, those who have not already changed their utility supplier could save up to £170 by doing so.
"With winter drawing in and all suppliers having lowered their prices, now is a good time for all customers to check whether they are getting a good deal for their energy," commented Ofgem chief executive Alistair Buchanan.
Commenting on the figures, Scott Byrom, utilities expert at moneysupermarket.com, said: "It is encouraging to see an increase in the number of people changing gas and electricity providers in the first seven months of this year.
"Some consumers remain hesitant about swapping provider, believing it is too complicated. I would advise these customers to take the plunge and shop around, as it is highly likely they will be paying too much for their energy."
