Price cuts as utility companies bid for customers

Published On 2 October 2007
gas hob British Gas has launched a new tariff which it claims makes it the cheapest utility supplier in the country.

The new tariff is called Click Energy 4 and the scheme was welcomed by consumer groups.

Karen Darby, founder of SimplySwitch.com, said that the battle between different utility suppliers was good news for consumers, as they benefit from better levels of service and decreasing prices.

"This is a crucial time of the year for the energy industry and, like British Gas, Powergen and Scottish & Southern Energy have also introduced new deals ahead of the winter months," she explained.

"While British Gas currently tops the tables with its latest offering, its lead is only marginal and it has suffered recently from some well-publicised customer service problems.

"There are huge price differences between the various providers and tariffs, but it's up to the customer to be proactive and find out how much they could save by switching."

Ms Darby added that British Gas' new price scheme required users to read their own meters and input the information online, making it unsuitable for "the elderly, or those uncomfortable with online transactions".
