Consumers 'should check mobile insurance small print'

It is vitally important the people opting to take out insurance on their mobile phone carefully check the small print before agreeing to the policy, an industry expert has said.James Harrison, chief executive of Insurancewide.com, explained that some consumers simply opted to arrange cover for their handset through mobile phone retailer as "they should be in a position to provide everything you need and replace the phone quickly".
However, he added: "Alternatively you can shop around. The cover will be much the same but you do need to check the small print for exclusions."
As a final alternative, Mr Harrison suggested that it is possible to add mobile phones to a house insurance policy by opting for the 'all risks' option.
"It is worth noting that if you do insure a mobile phone through a home contents policy the claim process can take longer," he warned.
A report last year highlighted the growing importance of mobile phone insurance after a thief ran up a bill of £50,000 on a handset stolen from the Scottish Parliament.
