Consumers welcome capped utility deal

Bill Households around the UK are likely to welcome the news that Powergen has launched a new capped energy product.

The utility giant has revealed that customers will now be able to fix their energy prices at the current rate until January 2009 with no exit fees or charges.

Scott Byrom, utilities expert from Moneysupermarket, said that the fixed-rate deal could prove popular with certain customers.

"Capped deals are worth considering if you want stability and consistency with your energy bills and if you feel energy prices will increase," he said.

But prices may even fall in the wake of declining wholesale costs, Mr Byrom added, and so households could consider online tariffs better value for money.

Powergen said it introduced the fixed-rate product after its research showed that 35 per cent of customers wanted to fix energy costs, but 57 per cent didn't want to pay a fee to do so.
