Brits 'ignoring holiday insurance'

Beach Many UK holidaymakers will depart on this year's vacation without any form of travel insurance, a new study suggested.

Research carried out by moneysupermarket.com found that one in five people in the UK will go away this year without any travel insurance.

Of these people, half will have simply forgotten to obtain cover, but the rest will have done so deliberately.

A worrying four per cent of holidaymakers revealed that they never take insurance out before a trip.

"With the prospect of spending a few days in the sun, it appears travel insurance is the last thing on the mind of some Brits," explained Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com.

"While holidaymakers might think nothing will happen to them while they are away, travel insurance is vital for claiming on cancellations, lost cash, public liability and providing emergency medical treatment.

"It gives you added peace of mind should anything go wrong."

Elsewhere in the study, it was found that 52 per cent of people who do opt for travel insurance use the internet to search for the best deal. Only 14 per cent opt for the cover offered to them by their travel agent.
