Green insurance 'growing in popularity'

Sky As environmental issues climb further up the public agenda, it is likely that products like green car insurance will become more popular, an expert has claimed.

David Douglas, a spokesperson from the Environmental Transport Association, explained that the demand for green car insurance has "been steady" more a few years, but the country could now be entering a "green bubble" where demand increases rapidly.

He explained: "What's interesting as well is that as the public gets more knowledgeable about it, they start to see the difference between genuinely green companies and companies with what we call a 'greenwash': [who] put a green gloss on things.

"It's definitely a growth industry, and I think it will continue to grow. It's growing quickly at the moment but it's only so because it's so high on the agenda.

"As long as it's high on the political agenda, the growth will be quite steep – after the election growth will probably slow down, but it will probably continue to go upwards because climate change is in the public consciousness."

Mr Douglas said that previously green car insurance had appealed to "a free living type", but now more people are "prepared to pay a premium for the knowledge that they are doing their bit".
