Charity credit cards 'still good value'

cash machine Charity credit cards continue to offer "very competitive" rates compared to regular cards and function well as stand-alone product even without the charity element, Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) has claimed this week.

The bank, which donates £20 to a number of different charities every time a customer first uses their charity card and 0.25 per cent of all purchases thereafter, is one of several financial institutions to offer such cards. Nationwide and American Express also offer similar products, as does Barclaycard.

"If you compare our charity card to any of the high street banks' normal cards, they are still pretty much as good so it is not really a 'one or the other' or an 'either or'," said Alex Barnett, a spokesperson for HBOS.

He assured customers that the bank's different cards - which provide for Cancer Research UK, the NSPCC or the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) - all carried the same terms to allow customers to choose which charity they would like to support.

Halifax charity cards have a six month zero per cent offer on balance transfers and purchases and offer a typical APR of 16.9 per cent.
