According to consumer website moneysupermarket.com, 69 per cent of mobile owners in the UK do not have insurance to cover their phone in the event of damage or theft.

Of these people, 13 per cent believe their mobile is covered by another insurance policy, leaving many people without any cover whatsoever.

Many people responded to the survey by saying that they ignore mobile phone insurance because it is too expensive.

However, the website pointed out that there were 800,000 reported mobile thefts last year and the average cost of replacing a handset can be as much as £200.

"Despite the large number of mobile phone thefts, the research shows most people do not worry enough about the costs they could face due to loss or damage," said Rob Barnes, head of mobiles at the website.

"Those relying on their contents insurance should remember not all policies automatically cover your mobile. My advice would be to ring your insurer and find out exactly what the contents policy covers and when.

Figures from Halifax show that Brits have had £8.3 billion worth of possessions stolen from them while out and about over the last five years, and that mobiles were the most commonly taken item.
