Drivers 'can act to keep car insurance premiums down'

Driving While Gordon Brown's March Budget has increased the cost of motoring in the UK, drivers can still keep costs down by making sure they have the most appropriate insurance deal, according to a leading insurer.

American Express Motor Insurance carried out a study which found that recent fuel price increases have already forced 20 per cent of drivers to change their motoring habits.

Of these, 15 per cent said they try to drive less now, 10 per cent revealed that they have switched to a more economical vehicle and one per cent now use more public transport.

Despite this, just 57 per cent of motorists said that they shopped around when looking for car insurance.

"The cost of motoring seems to rise year on year and whilst there is little motorists can do to cut the cost of fuel or road tax, insurance is one area where real savings can be made," explained Joanne Field, the marketing manager at American Express Motor Insurance.

According to American Express, there are a few simple precautions that drivers can take to make sure their car insurance premiums remain low. These include protecting no-claims bonuses, parking off the road and not attracting points for speeding.

Recent figures from the AA show that the average annual premium for car insurance is now £802.
