Two more utility suppliers cut their prices

Bank of England After British Gas cut the costs of is utilities for consumers, two other suppliers have followed suit.

Last week, British Gas implemented price cuts that could save utility customers as much as £402 a year. Now, both Powergen and npower have revealed that they too will be reducing the prices consumers have to pay for their utilities.

Powergen, the UK's second largest supplier, said that it would slash gas prices by 16 per cent and electricity by five per cent - typically saving customers £92.

Similarly, npower customers will have to pay 16 per cent less for gas and three per cent less for electricity.

"These price cuts are good news for customers, but it's a pity they only come into effect after most people have turned off their heating," said Karen Darby, founder of consumer website SimplySwitch.com.

"While the recent battle between energy companies has resulted in better deals for the consumer, energy prices still have a long way to fall before customers can recoup the extra amounts they've been paying over the last three years."

Ms Darby warned consumers that the gap between the cheapest and most expensive utility suppliers has widened in recent months, making it vital that people check to see if they could benefit from switching.

"The message to energy companies should be loud and clear: switching suppliers is now so simple that people are no longer willing to put up with high prices or poor customer service."
