Drivers advised to check insurance before visiting Europe

As summer approaches, people planning on taking a driving holiday in Europe should take the time to check their insurance is up to scratch, an industry expert has warned.According to data published by American Express, 3.1 million Britons take their car over the Channel every year.
However, if the worst does happen and a breakdown occurs, it can cost up to £2,000 to get both the people and vehicle back to the UK.
The insurer also found that more than one in ten (11 per cent) holiday makers have suffered a breakdown while driving in Europe, meaning that 350,000 people have had to seek help while away.
"Breaking down is never a pleasant experience, let alone when abroad," warned Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services.
"I would recommend that anyone driving on the continent checks their breakdown policy to ensure they are covered abroad."
A recent report from moneysupermarket.com found that people were six times more likely to be in a car accident near where they live.
