Britons cautioned on holiday credit card fees

Those venturing abroad for their holidays this year have been cautioned about wasting millions of pounds on credit card fees.

The Post Office has estimated that approximately 49 per cent of holidaymakers intend to use their credit cards abroad and will spend about £9.4 billion.

This means that these holidaymakers could be handing over as much as £258 million in fees, according to the Post Office.

Post Office head of communications Claire Oldstein said: "We are now four times more likely to spend on plastic abroad than 10 years ago. It's shocking not only to see how much people are being penalised to use their cards on holiday, but how few are aware of this.

"We urge holidaymakers to check with their bank or credit card provider whether they will be paying a fee to shop overseas before they go."

There are currently a lot of good zero per cent deals on offer, which can help consumers avoid such fees, added Ms Oldstein.

Meanwhile, the managing director of Find.co.uk Kate Marsden has cautioned Brits on dynamic currency conversion, a process which could see them incur more charges when using credit cards abroad.
