Car insurance 'could cover fuel damage'

Petrol Pump Car insurance policyholders should be able to claim for damages as a result of filling up with what is suspected to be contaminated petrol.

Thousands of motorists have been affected by what the Society of Motoring Manufacturers (SMMT) believes to be a "batch of suspect fuel".

The motoring industry body is calling on those who believe their vehicle breakdown might be linked to the dodgy petrol to keep fuel receipts and note the mileage when they fill up.

It notes: "If the problem does turn out to be faulty fuel the suppliers may be responsible for repair costs."

But the Association of British Insurers said those with comprehensive car insurance should be able to claim back the cost of accidental damage caused by contaminated fuel.

A spokesperson for the organisation added it is not yet clear where the liability for this problem lies.

"Nevertheless, the insurance industry can provide this important reassurance to customers in the meantime that, provided they have comprehensive insurance, they need not lose out," he concluded.
