Has Halifax stashed your cash?

Halifax Halifax is launching a new scheme to reunite customers with £44 million of funds held in 'dormant' bank accounts that haven't been accessed for over 15 years.

The vast majority of Halifax's dormant accounts are savings accounts, and over 75 per cent have a balance of less than £100, the bank said.

Nevertheless Halifax admitted that funds 'stashed' in dormant accounts total £44 million.

In an attempt to reacquaint people with their money, Halifax says it will mail dormant account customers, launch a national and regional newspaper advertising campaign, and make claim forms available in all Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches.

Mike Regnier, head of savings at HBOS, said: "Our job is to reunite as many of our customers as is possible with their cash."

He added: "We are using every means at our disposal to do so – mailings, advertising and the internet."

Halifax has been an active member of the British Bankers' Association's dormant account scheme since its inception in May 2001.
