Burglary costs to hit £170m in January

British homeowners are expected to collectively suffer around £170 million in costs due to the number of burglaries in January, a new report has found. Research by Halifax discovered that about 76,000 burglaries are expected this month, which is 26 per cent more for this month when compared to the yearly average.
This translates to one burglary every 35 seconds in January while the report showed that 40 per cent of burglaries take place in daytime hours.
When looking at a regional breakdown of burglary levels, Nottingham was the worst hit area in 2006 followed by London, Leeds, Enfield, Barnet and Bradford. In comparison, Colchester, Bath and Shrewsbury were deemed the safest places in the UK.
Vicky Emmott, Halifax spokesperson, said: "We tend to see a rise in burglaries during January as burglars know that it is the time when our homes are packed with lots of new and expensive items, ranging from electrical goods to jewellery.
"We must remember that thieves are opportunists and will strike during the day or night if they feel a property has inadequate security and the timing is right. The fact so many burglaries take place during daylight hours shows the importance of always remaining vigilant."
