£32.2bn to split by divorced couples in 2007

divorce Around £32.2 billion will be split by divorced couples in 2007, according to a new survey.

The survey by MoneyExpert said this asset split represents the equivalent of around £230,000 per couple.

According to the figures, the largest asset to be divided by divorced couples tends to be property – around 36 per cent of their total wealth – followed by pensions and cash.

Other assets that need to be split between squabbling couples include securities, insurance and loans.

Sean Gardner, MoneyExpert chief executive, said: "[Divorce] can be made all the worse by increased financial pressures following a separation or divorce.

"Also financial problems can be a significant factor behind marital breakdown and to help avoid this, it's important for couples to be honest and open with each other about their finances."

Recent research has found that January is the most common month for divorce proceedings with the total number of partners choosing to split reaching 140,000.
