£130,000 debt for Cheeky Girls

Cheeky Girls It has emerged that the Romanian pop twins known as the Cheeky Girls are in serious financial debt.

Gabriela and Monica Irimia, both 24, are thought to be around £130,000 in debt, according to the Mail on Sunday.

There has been widespread criticism of the girls' mother, Margit Semal, who is in charge of their business affairs.

It is thought that a number of songwriters, producers and distributors are still awaiting payment and injunctions have been taken out in a bid to prevent the girls from releasing further discs.

"The Cheeky Girls and I do not owe any money. Our company's invoices are all paid on time," said Ms Semal.

If the debts are as significant as is feared, the Liberal Democrat frontbench spokesman for Wales and Northern Ireland, Lembit Opik, who is currently in a relationship with Gabriela, could be called upon to help the pair with their bills.

Mr Opik stepped in last year to prevent the girls being deported back to Romania.
