January will see pronounced sales with bargain hunters planning to spend in the region of £5.5 billion, according to new figures.Research from Direct Line has found that January sales shoppers plan to buy £1.6 billion more worth of goods than they did in January 2006.
And in preparation for the new year spend, 2.7 million Brits requested vouchers instead of Christmas presents from family and friends, which amounts to around £73 million lying around UK households.
The bulk of the January spending spree will be on electronic equipment with one in three shoppers looking to pick up a bargain TV, laptop or MP3 player.
Camel McCarthy, Direct Line spokesman, said: "Shoppers may be picking up many bargains this January, but with all the extra possessions in the home this Christmas, it's important that homeowners make sure all of their home contents are fully covered.
"Direct Line offers a ten per cent increase in cover over the Christmas period to give its customers the chance to assess whether their policy is adequate and up to date."
