Insure against flooding danger

People affected by yesterday's flooding in Scotland should turn to their insurance company for help, More Than home insurance has advised.The company also said it was important to follow the guidance of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and local councils.
More Than managing director Mike Holliday-Williams said: "Our advice to people affected by flooding is to use the skills and expertise of your insurance company.
"Our claims staff are trained to deal with these disasters and will relieve some of the immense stress and strain these situations can bring.
"By following More Than's basic steps, you will be able to reduce the amount of damage to your possessions and your home."
Other advice included opening windows, draining photographs and paperwork of excess water and keeping damaged furniture in a dry place to be inspected.
Electrics must be avoided, the company stressed, and also warned against exposing items to extreme levels of heat.
To prevent rot, the company advised clearing mud from airbricks and said all carpets should be removed and kept in the garden.
It was important not attempt to redecorate immediately but wait until the property was fully dried – something which More Than warned could take months.
SEPA had 16 severe flood warnings in place yesterday, with more rain predicted to fall. The most severely affected areas were Perth and Kinross, Tayside and Strathclyde.
