Avoid leaving Christmas presents in car

Christmas shopper Shoppers are being warned not to leave presents in the car while out and about this Christmas.

Research from Saga insurance claims that around £2 billion worth of presents are left in cars during the run up to Christmas and that 59 per cent of the two-thirds of consumers who take their car with them when shopping leave goods in their vehicle.

In addition, 68 per cent of shoppers keep receipts in the bag with the goods, making an insurance claim more difficult should the worst happen or allowing thieves to simply return the goods for a refund.

Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga, commented: "Leaving shopping in your car may seem like a good idea at the time, but if the car is broken into or stolen many people could find the personal belongings cover on their policy woefully inadequate."

The average price of Christmas presents stored in a vehicle comes to £150, the survey found.

Last month, a four-fold rise in car radio thefts from Ford Fiestas in Cardiff was blamed on an urban myth, which claimed that their microchips could pick up digital television broadcasts.
