Nikon cameras Holidaying Brits have been warned to insure their camera while abroad given the increasing number of snap happy digital camera enthusiasts, according to new research.

With half-term holidays in full swing, esure Travel Insurance is warning holidaymakers to ensure they have suitable travel insurance policies to cover all cameras, camcorders and camera-phones that they take away with them.

The study has shown that the number of photos Brits take on holiday has doubled over the last five years from 49 to 86. Much of this new trend has been driven by the popularity of digital cameras with large memory card and also mobile phone cameras.

A fifth of holidaymakers (19 per cent) admit to taking over 100 photos while on holiday while three per cent even admit to snapping away over 300 times – with the resulting developing costs adding up to £20.

Jacky Brown, esure's head of travel insurance, said: "Not that long ago filling hand luggage with camera film was a top priority for holidaymakers. Nowadays, all they need to remember is an additional memory card.

"People rely heavily on their digital cameras, camcorders and mobile phones to make a record of their holiday but often forget their value and their susceptibility to damage in hot climes either on the beach or by the sea."
