Spurs The cost of following a lower league football team can be as detrimental to your pocket as your health, a new report has found.

A study by backyourclub.com has discovered that one in three fans outside the Premiership would be prepared to pay over £60 for an away trip, with many supporters spending over £1,000 to follow their team home and away each season.

Conference fans were found to be the most loyal, with half attending over 20 home games a season and many claiming their annual spend is in excess of £2,500.

Alison Rolls, spokesperson for the website, commented: "Premiership football fans regularly pay large amounts of money to watch the multimillionaire players on show at Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and Anfield.

"However, as our research highlights, it can be just as expensive for the grass roots football fan to follow their local side."

Stuck away in the south-west of the country, Plymouth Argyle fans were discovered to spend the most in a season, as they follow madcap manager Ian Holloway and his players around the country.
