woman and girl use laptop Mums looking to combine a life with their children with a successful career are taking proactive steps to set up their own businesses from home, according to a new survey by AXA Protection.

The financial protection provider found that 34 per cent of new and expectant mums are looking to run their own businesses in order to generate an income and look after their children at the same time.

Dubbed "mumtrenpruers", these ambitious women are spending around 18.4 hours per week working on home-based business projects, generating an average £467.91 in earnings per month.

And it seems this new way of working could soon become even more popular among British mums, as a new survey by the television channel Discovery Home and Health reveals that half of all working mums would choose to stay at home with their children if they could afford to.

Iain Mallon, head of AXA Protection, said: "It is interesting to see how many new and expectant mothers are looking to start their own businesses from home and also the level of contribution that they are currently making to family incomes through home-working activities.

"By undertaking this activity, these entrepreneurial mothers are making a significant contribution to both the economy and their family's financial well-being."

Of those surveyed, 26 per cent of women said money had driven them to combine childcare with working from home, while 20 per cent said they simply did not want to give up their career but also wanted to look after their children.
